Aide et Action recently said that this initiative is part of the Consortium for Out of School Children (CCOSC) project, in collaboration with the Educate A Child programme facilitated by Aide et Action and supported by the local communities and target primary schools.
Aide et Action’s CCOSC project, Education Above All Educate a Child programme, and Youth Star Cambodia, a Cambodian NGO, helps unlock PK’s capabilities to improve the children’s learning in primary schools in target provinces.
PK collaborated with two target primary schools, Prey Moul and Svay Chrum in Rolea Ba’ier district and held eight remedial classes for 123 poor students (38 girls), considered out of school children (OOSC), to improve their understanding of mathematics and Khmer language.
It said that based on the results of the pre-test and the post-test of each student, 80% of the students improved their learning capabilities for mathematics and Khmer language.
PK’s Project Coordinator Van Voeurt said yesterday that the purpose of teaching the students in primary schools is aimed to help students failing the first semester exam, to improve their learning of the two subjects to pass in the next semester.
He added that the OOSC project is partnering with the Educate a Child programme funded by Aide et Action, along with some funding from the schools.
“PK’s implementation in the two schools will increase to 22 other schools in the province, to improve student’s learning of Khmer and mathematics,” he said.
Director of Kampong Chhnang Education Department Sim Broem said they also support the PK’s initiative to help students weak in Khmer and mathematics.
He also considers this project very important to reduce the rate of out-of-school students in primary schools. He also hopes that PK will expand their mission to help poor students in the remote area to improve their learning capabilities.
Broem also added that across the province, there are over 60,000 students at the primary school level and 50,000 in secondary and high schools.
“We see from last year, the primary level students who are out of school has decreased, but I am worried that the secondary students is increasing, so I hope the other NGOs and organisations will help us to raise awareness among students to love learning for their future development,” he said.
