Fighting Climate Change with Clean Water: Schools on the Frontlines

From books to clean water, mobile librarian Sim At is building resilience in schools of Cambodia’s coastal regions. When communities lead, every drop is justice, every tap a promise, and every school a door to new possibilities.

Kep’s mobile librarian Sim At has spent years navigating winding roads to bring books, knowledge, and hope to children in schools and villages. His library van carries not only stories but also possibilities, lighting up children’s faces and opening doors to imagination.

But Sim At’s mission goes far beyond books.

During school holidays, he becomes a builder of resilience.

On 18 September 2025, he rolled up his sleeves at Deum Snay Primary School in Kampot, helping to deliver and install a new water filtration system—an effort quietly reshaping the school’s climate resilience.

Climate Resilience: Safe to Drink, Safe to Learn

In coastal Cambodia, rising sea levels and saltwater intrusion threaten homes, farmland, and the very water children rely on. Clean water should not be a luxury—it is a human right and a frontline defence against climate change.

Through its CO-SAVED project, co-funded by the EU, Action Education / Aide et Action equips schools with filtration systems that transform unsafe sources into reliable lifelines. Hidden threats—bacteria, nitrates, heavy metals—are removed so children can stay healthy, focus on learning, and build resilience.

Water Justice and Equity: Local Hands, Lasting Impact

Around the world, some communities overconsume and pollute water, while others struggle with scarcity and contamination.

In this global and local context, Sim At is a hero rooted in action, courage, and equity. By ensuring children in schools have safe water, he is not just addressing a health crisis; he is standing for justice. Every child deserves the same right to clean water, regardless of where they are born.

Whether reading stories aloud or installing water filters, his mission is to empower children, protect their health, and strengthen communities.
