On the Road to Knowledge: The Mobile Library Brings Stories and Smiles

The early morning sun was rising over Cambodia as our little mobile library rolled out from Action Education / Aide et Action’s field office in Kep. The small van, carrying more than 1,000 colourful books, bumped along dusty roads, winding through lush green rice fields and swaying palm trees.

The mobile library’s destination today: Rones village, a peaceful community.

As the little van arrived, laughter erupted.

Children ran forward to help mobile librarian Sim At spread a mat under the shade of a tree. Together, they unpacked baskets overflowing with books, transforming a simple corner of the village into a vibrant little library — alive with colour, stories, and laughter.

Some children sat wide-eyed, listening intently as older peers read aloud. Others flipped through pages of Khmer folktales, stories about birds and animals, or even books on water and history.

For the youngest, like Siev Heng, aged 3, simply holding a book and gazing at the bright pictures was enough to spark delight. She whispered: “I’m always happy when he comes here!”

For Lorn Punleu, aged 10, the mobile library is a place to practise reading while school is closed for holidays: “I go to school at Pong Toek Primary but the new academic year will start on 15 October. I like learning the alphabet. I can’t read well yet, but I enjoy the pictures. I love storybooks.”

Driving Knowledge: Sim At’s Journey to Support Literacy

Behind the wheel sits Sim At, a guardian of knowledge.

He has devoted years to carrying the magic of books to remote villages and schools across Kep. From Monday to Friday, he drives along winding roads and dusty trails, bringing stories, learning, and hope where they are needed most.

“If there’s no mobile library, these children never read,” he says with quiet conviction.

“They’re only playing with phones. Here, they gather in groups, share moments with friends, and discover the joy of stories. Sometimes, when I arrive, they call me because they can’t wait to read.”

For him, this work is not just a job, but a calling. “I have three grown-up children of my own. My wife sells food and drinks near a school, and I work to support my family. This job makes me happy because it brings knowledge and joy to others.”

In Cambodia, where books do not always reach every child, Sim At drives a van that carries not only stories but the power to transform lives.

Books on the Move: Opening Worlds and Opportunities

Our mobile libraries — two in Kampot and one in Kep — play a vital role in rural areas that often lack bookshops, libraries, or internet access. They create equal opportunities, reaching remote villages and bringing books directly to children who would otherwise have none.

Their mission is to foster a love of reading — nurturing curiosity, imagination, and creativity. By giving children the chance to practise reading beyond the classroom, they support literacy. They also bring hope — opening windows to new worlds and opportunities.

Equally important, they build community spirit, turning each visit into a joyful event where children learn and share stories together.

For the children of Rones and many other villages, the mobile library is more than a van of books — it is a gateway to knowledge, a spark for imagination, and a reminder that every child deserves the chance to learn, dream, and grow.
