Action Education / Aide et Action on Radio France Internationale (RFI)

RFI shines the media spotlight on livelihoods at risk and futures at stake, echoing and amplifying our call for safer, more sustainable livelihoods in Cambodia’s coastal regions. Through its CO-SAVED project, co-funded by the EU, Action Education / Aide et Action (AEA) works with fishing communities to adapt, diversify, and build resilience.

Marine catches in Cambodia’s coastal regions continue to decline, putting traditional fishing communities at risk. Exposed to dangerous storms, limited resources, and volatile incomes, many households are seeking alternatives such as eco-tourism and aquaculture — with sea bass farming offering a safer and more sustainable livelihood.

Our Regional Projects Manager, Mattrohet Tahir, gave voice to these realities in an interview with RFI at Trapeang Sangkae, Kampot province.

“They no longer take the risk of fishing at sea with its waves and storms, which was quite tough for them. Instead, they can work closer to home while still having time to care for the children and send them to school,” he remarked.

“Fish farming is highly beneficial. Thanks to AEA’s support in raising fish, they now also have more time and can operate a boat for tourists.”

RFI press coverage underscores the essential role of journalism in amplifying community voices. By broadcasting their stories, the media not only raises awareness of the urgent challenges facing coastal families but also fosters wider support for sustainable solutions.

Together, let’s continue to work alongside coastal communities to protect livelihoods, enhance resilience, and secure a safer future.
