Sor Sokunthea, 19, from Broang Chrap village in Kampot province, is a Law student at Angkor Khemara University and a community volunteer with Action Education / Aide et Action. She brings energy, compassion, and determination to everything she does. She is breaking barriers and opening doors—helping children in her community access the quality education they deserve.
How long have you been volunteering, and what are your responsibilities?
I’ve been a community volunteer for about a year. I work two days a week, mostly collecting data to identify children from poor families. This helps provide scholarships and in-kind support.
What do you enjoy about working with young children?
I love volunteering because I believe education can change lives. I enjoy working with young children because they’re curious, eager to learn, and full of potential. Early Childhood Education helps them become brave and develop knowledge from a young age.

What skills have you gained from this experience?
I’ve learnt a lot about the community, teamwork, data entry, managing documents, and child development. I also learnt how to solve problems and stay organised.
How will this experience help you in the future?
It will help me if I apply for jobs in education or community development. I’ve gained confidence and a stronger sense of responsibility.
As a young woman, what challenges have you faced? What advice would you give to others?
I’ve faced many challenges. I’m young and sometimes I lack courage — I’m scared to speak in public. But I believe women can overcome anything. My message to other young women is: Don’t be scared. Try to make a positive impact in your community.
