This International Women’s Day on 8 March 2025, let’s celebrate Cambodian women and the art of sustainability. At Action Education / Aide et Action (AEA), we stand with rural women dedicated to protecting the planet and empowering their communities. Their resilience, strength, and creativity are a source of inspiration.
In a world dominated by fast fashion, which contributes heavily to environmental degradation, the development of green supply chains is crucial to counteracting the spread of plastic waste. Through the CO-SAVED project, co-funded by the EU, AEA works to empower women who contribute to climate action while building sustainable livelihoods in the coastal regions of Kep, Kampot, Koh Kong, and Sihanoukville.
We provide materials to artisans like Seang Cha to support the production of sustainable products, such as biodegradable mats, bags, and other eco-friendly goods. Cha’s work exemplifies the blending of traditional Khmer craftsmanship with eco-conscious innovation. By perpetuating traditional techniques, she preserves a rich cultural heritage while contributing to climate action.

Seang Cha’s work not only supports her local community but also serves as a model of how innovation can be rooted in tradition to help protect the planet for future generations.
Tradition Meets Sustainability
Straw handbags, traditional Khmer mats, and other eco-friendly products, crafted using centuries-old Khmer weaving techniques, not only showcase Cambodia’s culture but also offer a solution to plastic pollution.
Unlike plastic products, which are harmful to both the environment and human health, handcrafted items are biodegradable, non-toxic, and far less harmful to wildlife. Importantly, handicrafts embody a commitment to a cleaner, greener future.
Handicrafts symbolize a more responsible and ethical consumption that values people over profit. Rural women’s work is more than just craftsmanship—it is an act of empowerment, as they strive for economic independence and the ability to shape a better future for themselves and their families.
