Resilience in Koh Kong: Climate Adaptation Through Education

Building resilience against climate change is rooted in education. Action Education / Aide et Action (AEA) supports students and teachers to gain hands-on experience in greenhouse management and vegetable farming to enhance productivity, protect the environment, and strengthen community ties.

Cambodia’s coastal communities face challenges related to environmental sustainability, agricultural productivity, and the growing impacts of climate change. Rising sea levels, erratic weather patterns, and prolonged droughts threaten the livelihoods of farmers who depend on coastal agriculture.

As part of AEA’s mission to support these communities, our CO-SAVED project, co-funded by the EU, works on providing education and training in sustainable farming practices to local students and teachers, helping build resilience against climate change while improving agricultural productivity, and creating market linkages to improve livelihoods.

Co-Action: Hands-on Learning

On 27 February 2025, our partner Angkor Green Investment and Development (AGID) facilitated an educational exchange for students and teachers from Prek Smach School, Kirisakor District in Koh Kong. The group visited Botum Sakor School, where they engaged in hands-on training in greenhouse management.

They learnt about vegetable growth techniques, and how to establish effective market linkages. Students also had the opportunity to visit nearby vegetable farms in the local community. They could gain valuable, real-world experience in sustainable farming practices that they can bring back to their own communities.

Co-Impact: Cultivating Knowledge

This exchange program equips both students and teachers with the essential knowledge and skills to implement sustainable agricultural practices within their own communities. By connecting classroom learning with practical experiences, children gained a clear understanding of how sustainable farming can boost productivity and enhance environmental health.

Visits to local farms further strengthened the bond between schools and the local communities, fostering collaboration that will drive lasting change for coastal agriculture in Cambodia. Together, let’s empower future generations to lead the way in promoting sustainable agriculture and improving their communities’ livelihoods.
