A Peaceful Table by the Sea: Neak Net’s Recipe for Sustainability

Ready for a culinary journey by the sea? Nestled between lush mangrove forests and the tranquil waters of the Gulf of Thailand, a welcoming eco-resort invites visitors from Cambodia, Southeast Asia, and beyond. Here, time slows down — and the fresh flavours of land and sea arrive straight to your plate.

Kampong Samaky, in the coastal province of Kampot, is a peaceful getaway, a gathering place for cultures, and a safe haven for travellers seeking calm. It’s at the heart of a community built on solidarity.

It’s also the workplace of Neak Net — a dedicated cook, a proud mother and grandmother, and a changemaker in her own right.

Through the European Union co-funded CO-SAVED project, Action Education / Aide et Action is empowering her to build climate resilience and sustainable livelihoods rooted in local food systems, Cambodian hospitality, and shared connection.

The Ingredients of Solidarity, A Taste of Resilience

A lifelong resident of Kampong Samaky, Neak Net is deeply connected to the food she prepares. She sources her seafood from the fishermen in her community and occasionally picks up fresh seabass from the fisheries of Trapeang Sangkae, in the same province.

Even her herbs and vegetables are grown by local farmers, creating an authentic experience for guests. Every one of her dishes tells a story of community solidarity and sustainability.

She loves welcoming guests with a menu rich in local flavours. “Steamed crab, spicy shrimp noodles, and squid stir-fried with Kampot’s famous green pepper are guest favourites,” she explains.

Every culinary creation carries a piece of her heart. “I cook for visitors the way I cook for my own children,” she adds.

Welcoming the World: Supporting Coastal Livelihoods

Through training, Neak Net sharpened the skills that keep guests coming back. She was also equipped with a brand-new stove, allowing her to prepare meals efficiently and hygienically.

“I’m happy with this new stove,” she says with a smile.

But Neak Net’s story goes beyond the plates she serves.

By building her livelihood around food and hospitality, she’s contributing to collective action for community resilience. Her kitchen is at the heart of sustainable economic development, helping her weather the impacts of climate change while preserving Cambodia’s rich culinary heritage.

In a world that’s constantly changing, her kitchen remains a place of comfort and connection — where stories are shared, traditions honoured, and hope is served daily. With every plate she serves, she’s delighting her guests — cooking up a better future.
