Coastal schools in Cambodia face literacy challenges due to limited access to books, inadequate educational resources, and insufficient infrastructure. Yet, in the face of these barriers, Andoung Teuk Primary School in Koh Kong is actively shaping a brighter, inspiring future for its students.
In Koh Kong, communities like Andoung Teuk navigate a range of challenges—from climate vulnerability and limited economic opportunities to restricted access to educational resources. Many coastal schools lack basic facilities, such as clean classrooms, proper sanitation, and adequate learning materials.
These conditions negatively impact student health, attendance, and motivation, as well as the ability of teachers to deliver quality education. For many children, books are scarce at home, and exposure to reading is minimal outside the classroom.
Yet even in the face of these challenges, the determination of students and teachers remains strong. They understand that literacy is more than a skill—it is a foundation for resilience, critical thinking, and long-term opportunity. It opens doors to a future beyond immediate hardships, providing the tools to thrive.
Co-Action: Books & Bricks
In response to learning needs, Andoung Teuk Primary School organized a reading competition for Grade 3 and Grade 6 students on 30 April 2025. This event was not just about testing literacy—it was a celebration of curiosity, expression, and the joy of discovery. The initiative aimed to spark children’s interest in books, boost their confidence, and nurture a lifelong love of reading.

At the same time, ongoing renovations are transforming the school’s physical environment. Andoung Teuk is currently tiling its computer room to create a clean, safe, and inspiring space. Enhancing this digital space will provide students with access to interactive reading materials and a broader range of learning resources, further strengthening literacy outcomes.
These efforts are supported by Action Education / Aide et Action (AEA) under the European Union (EU) co-funded CO-SAVED project. Renovation work is currently underway in ten schools across Cambodia’s coastal provinces—two in Kep, three in Preah Sihanouk, four in Koh Kong, and one in Kampot.

Co-Impact: Resilience Through Education
The reading competition gave students an opportunity to step into the spotlight, showcase their skills, and feel the pride of accomplishment. For many children, this was more than just an academic exercise—it was a moment to feel seen, valued, and capable.
This initiative sent a clear message: reading matters.
Education—starting with literacy and safe learning environments—is a path to resilience. In a region where daily life is often shaped by environmental uncertainty and economic hardship, investing in education is a strategic and powerful tool for change.
